Finish your deck with Drilled Posts

Many homeowners this summer are building new decks, or replacing existing decks with new construction.

When it comes time to install railings, the time-honored tradition of wood balusters, top and bottom rails often complete the project. In recent years, however, stainless steel cable rails have become more affordable and readily available to consumers.

Choosing the posts can become a headache though, as the homeowner is often left to choose between cold metal options (which distract from the beautiful wood decking), or to keep the wood aesthetic, will attempt to drill perfect holes through 4″ x 4″ deck posts.

At Woodway, we’ve simplified that process with our pre-drilled posts – in tight knot Western Cedar, Douglas Fir, or Mahogany.

Save time on the job site with Woodway’s pre-drilled posts for stainless steel cable installations. Our posts have 5/16″ pre-drilled holes at 3″ on center, reducing installation time with straight and accurate hole placement. Designed as a structural line post, they can be clad with wood, composite, PVC or vinyl, or used as a finished post.

The big fence project

The first six panels!

Consider this post a bit of a running commentary on a home project we recently completed. Using Woodway’s Tongue & Groove Fence Panels (30 of them!), we set upon the task of replacing an aging Cedar fence.

Because our fence is “shared” by two other neighbors – who were thrilled they’d be getting a “new” fence to look at – we started in one corner, with the most stable post that existed. Our process was simple: starting at that corner post, we had to remove the existing fence, and also remove all the other posts – because the previous fence hadn’t been installed using the common 8-foot on center posting method.

New and old!

After demolition of that first run of fence (about 80 feet), we attached our first panel to the existing post, dug a hole for a new post, braced a new post, attached the panel to the new post, and dropped two bags of quick set concrete in the hole. We followed that method for the remainder of the fence – and got six panels installed on the first day!

A few caveats, regarding our project:
1. We live in an ancient riverbed (near the Columbia River), which required the rental of a post drill and auger – the BEST investment we made on the project.
2. Though we completed the project with just two people, a third person is quite helpful for installation.
3. We made a quick decision regarding the height of our panels, which informed the rest of the project: we chose to align our panels using the middle rail of the panel – you may choose to align by the top or bottom!

Next time: completing the fence, including converting a fence panel into a gate!

The old!
The new
One side complete

Traditional and timeless: Estate Lattice

Cape May Estate Lattice

There exists a nearly endless supply of “premium” lattice products on the market today – in virtually every available material: wood, vinyl, PVC, metal, etc. Most of the non-wood vendors tout maintenance-free benefits of their product, but can’t measure up to Woodway’s time-honored tradition of excellence.

In addition to our traditional diagonal and square lattice offerings in Western Cedar, treated and painted wood, we’re proud of our historically accurate Estate Lattice products – which stand on their own as traditional patterns, but also feature modern production techniques.

Woodway Estate Lattice is a premium product which uses stainless steel brads instead of staples, so even the back side of the panel is virtually blemish-free – a noteworthy benefit for high-end applications. Our Estate Lattice – in Douglas Fir, Western Red Cedar and Redwood – is kiln dried and moulded, which makes it the perfect choice for all interior as well as exterior installations.

Timeless, sophisticated: Glass Post Caps

Woodway Glass Post Caps

Post Caps provide protection for fences, decks and yard posts, while instantly upgrading your home’s architectural features. Some of the first “modern” post caps were old tin cans – turned upside down to protect the tops of split wood fence posts. While wood is inherently resilient to decay from moisture absorbing into the sides of the posts, water introduced to the top of the post invites swelling and cracking – necessitating repeated replacement. Covering the post with a can, a scrap of tin or sheet metal then provided some protection.

In urban settings, homeowners began beautifying their fence posts and newels with carved or turned wood post caps – indeed, wood post caps remain the most popular style in the world.

Solid glass post caps add color to your yard and garden with the radiant beauty of real glass. Woodway Glass Post Caps add elegance to deck, porch or fence posts – even raised garden bed posts. The stunning glass post caps lend design sophistication and colorful appeal to your outdoor living spaces, and suggest timeless beauty.

Cobalt Blue Glass Post Cap

Made from 1/4″-thick solid-molded glass, Woodway’s solid glass post caps are available in five colors: Amber, Black, Cobalt Blue, Merlot Red and Olive Green. With the exception of the nearly opaque Black, the four other colors are semi-transparent – you can even add your own lighting for extra effect!

Glass Post Caps from Woodway are available in 4″ and 6″ styles, as well as a selection of hybrid glass and wood products. Our fusion of glass and wood creates a remarkably unique look that will enhance the beauty of your yard. The Hybrid Cedar-Trimmed Glass Post Cap is available in an array of four colors. Choose from our signature glass pyramid in Cobalt Blue, Amber, Olive green or opaque Black – all set in finely milled Western Red Cedar. The sealed glass barrier is not only aesthetically pleasing, it protects the post from nature’s elements.

Built by Professionals – our lattice story

In 1980, tired of the inferior materials available to their remodeling business, a group of professional contractors founded LWO Corporation, producers of the Woodway product line. They were determined to develop well-designed wood products that were durable, easy to install and beautiful to look at. Fortunately, at Woodway, we’re in the business of making wood products that not only perform well, but you look good, too. Our company was founded by craftsmen like you. We know that your customers want a high level of craftsmanship and quality design, at an affordable price. We help you make them happy.

Uncompromising Quality
Their original philosophy of putting quality above all other considerations has earned them a nationwide reputation as designers and manufacturers of superior wood products for the home and garden. We’re so proud of our product, that LWO Corp. offers a 20-year limited warranty on all lattice products!

Woodway Lattice is the industry standard for quality — no other lattice comes close. Woodway’s exacting, rugged standards are the only commercial lattice standards based on the Western Wood Products Association Lath Grading Rules. When combined with premium materials including Western Red Cedar, Douglas Fir and Mahogany, it’s no wonder Woodway has become America’s best selling premium grade lattice.

Our History
Originally, our lattice products were built on a custom-built table and hand-made jig. As production and national demand increased, technological advancements were implemented – including an innovative panel trimming method which dramatically sped up the build process. Within a short span of less than five years, LWO had designed, developed and created custom lattice machines, capable of automatic gluing, stapling, trimming and cutting – believed at the time to be the first such machines in the United States. Today, our machines are capable of producing nearly 250 4′ x 8′ diagonal panels per hour.

Quality, right down to the staple
Woodway Lattice is opposed-angle stapled for maximum wood-holding contact. Staples in Clear grades are glue-coated stainless steel; all other grades use 18 gauge, electroplated, galvanized and glue-coated steel fasteners to resist rust and improve holding power. Fasteners are set flush or slightly countersunk, parallel to the wood grain and their points do not protrude through the face. In addition, all 4’ wide panels are glued along at least four joint lines with industrial adhesive to improve panel integrity and strength. Our premium Douglas Fir Estate panels use Stainless Steel brads in the place of staples. Each panel is visually inspected for quality before it leaves the line.

Environmental Sustainability
Western Red Cedar is the primary species used in Woodway products. The species offers proven environmental sustainability in addition to bringing warmth, longevity and authenticity to any project. WRC, as it is often referred to, has the lowest environmental impact when compared to other materials, such as brick and fiber cement. Studies have shown WRC to be a carbon neutral component of the construction process, helping projects achieve a wide range of certification goals. The environmental benefits have been recognized by the USDA and other independent bodies. The species is harvested from managed forests in the Pacific Northwest US and British Columbia.
